Hey there! i am new here to the site and also am new to vegan. I haven't started yet, but plan on starting it Next Monday. I got a diet book that requires me to become vegan. I was a vegitarian for 6 years and two years ago started eating meats and stuff again. But Now I need to try a completely new program and become vegan. I am kind of discouraged and nervous about starting it because the receipes in my vegan cook book seem really overwhelming and expensive to make. SO i want to make some friends here and learn some more about the types of things i can snack on and such. I am busy person and always on the go, but i have a passion to try this! Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

.This site is too...well, there's so many ways to approach it or to be approached. Sorry, for the little note...navigation is still somewhat new for me ... I am a Vegan, and truly, it's not that pricey once you've gotten into it.
I just made muffins for a breakfast for tomorrow with a friend. I've cooked for over 34 yeasr, but Vegan cooking is a whole new mindset, and lifestyle. There's loads out there regarding food...so much more than even 10 years ago. You'll do just fine.
Which cookbook are you referring to when you say it seems overwhelming?
I'll be more than happy to help you with your goals.
Namaste, Carol

`I really can't see how being a Vegan could be expensive, unless you ive somewhere like outback Alaska or the middle of Siberia and have to ship in decent food.
Eat what is in season for a start.

.If food is not in demand (which sadly most soy substitutes aren't)...of course the market will call for a higher price on those items. It doesn't matter where you live (however, that can effect the cost a little - mostly importing food items, the quality and freshness, ect.)

I find it helpful to shop for the basics, then go to farmers markets and places like whole foods, for in season fruits and vegetables. A good book with some not so pricey recipes is "La Dolce Vegan". Tells you how to make your own pasta sauces and breads, and wheat meat. Lots of desserts also, and very good. Even tells you how to make your own cheese and cheese spreads, mixing different spices, etc. It is really a help. I never cooked as much as I do now, but it helps to know just what is in the food. Buying frozen foods that are vegan can be pricey, that is why I cook alot then freeze the leftovers for supper later on, or lunch to take to work. Funny how when my meat eating bf says he has no food, I am full and the fridge is stocked with my food! He is just too stubborn to eat it, makes me laugh at him.

`Hm...I don't know---AT FIRST, yes, I found that veganism is/was VERY expensive; however if you begin to cook your own meals, dishes, and desserts on your own and from scratch, it can actually be a lot cheaper. A huge serving of cheap staple ingredients and bulk meat substitutes goe a long way and lasts a long time--it really just depends on how patiend you are and how much time you have. Vegan yogurt (silk is the cheapest I've found, at 74 cents at MARTIN's) and even vegan egg substitue ($5 for a box that lasts...well, forever) aren't that expensive if you watch your money.

However, if all you do is buy things like ian's frozen vegan pizzas, boca burgers, veggie ribs, sausage, vegan soups and ramen and cookies and pre-made baking mixes, then it's going to be very expensive.

For the most part, if you are patient and slowly explore other options over a period of time, you will find that veganism can be pretty affordable as well. For example, while I bake a lot from scratch, today I found betty crocker brownie, sugar cookie, and cake recipies that were vegan; I'm just going to substitute the eggs with my egg substitue.

Just my opinion

`as a vegan of 6 years and loving it, my advice is to eat "wholesome". find staple foods that you can eat any day, beans and rice, sandwiches, burritos or wraps, etc. quick easy things made of simple ingredients. variety is key, eat a rainbow a day, spend your shopping time in the veggie section of the store and try new things. ever tried cactus? it will spice up a tofu scramble remarkably. you will realize that as a vegan, shopping can be remarkably easy as there are really only two sections of a grocery store that are needed. the entire center of the store (prepackaged foods) is useless to me except a few frivolties. as you get more comfortable with easy staples, begin expanding your cooking skills by veganizing "traditional meals" homemade potpies, pizzas, breaded eggplant "parm", quish, soups and stews, casseroles, etc. learn how to bake pie crusts, it is so easy, (2-3 ingredients). one of the best things i can recommend to an new vegan is start a "food night". host meals for friends to taste test, ask for donations so that the financial burden of the meals doesn't fall squarely on you, and get feedback on meals (and maybe interest others in the lifestyle through great meals and community as well).

I solved that problem by telling all my former "friends" to take a permanent hike unless they planned on becoming vegan and no longer committing or condoning any cruelty towards any animals. Now I no longer have any human friends but I feel a closer connection to my dog and to all the animals of the world. I am pretty much alone but I gain strength from spending time with Oscar(my loyal little brown dachshund dog who will always be my best friend) and from simply knowing that my purpose in life is to love all animals and to be their friend till the day I die. In fact, I plan on making out a will where I will leave all my financial and material possesions to animal rights organizations so I will continue to be the animals friend even after the day I die.

`Count me in- i am new here. Why are there brackets around the words former member below the names of some members? Do they mean they were once members of vegan passions but are no longer members?

`im new to veganism, was a veggie for over 7 years and always planned on going vegan purely for ethical reasons, none of my family or friends are even veggies which makes it really hard for me to live this lifestlye, but i care about animals so much that i could never go back to eating meat or meat bi products ever again. Its so nice to know there are many others who put importance of animal welfare as their main priority because that is what i believe passionately. By loving and caring for animals we can have a better understanding of the world, a better quality of life, which is meant for all living creatures.
