Posted:     Post subject: which vegan margarine?

I used to use sainsburys vegan margarine but have now found out they aren't going to stock it any more. Can anyone suggest a nice alternative. I don't like Pure. I have bought some of the Marks and Spencers brand to try but its not really that nice. I don't have many health food shops in my area so choice is a bit limited.

Hi Meday

Have you tried all 3 of the Pure margerines?

I find the soya one revolting, but the sunflower version much more palatable. The organic one is, of course, 50% more expensive.

Posted:     Post subject: Margarines... What about alternatives?

Hi there... all margarines are vegetable based and therefore come from oils... as oils are liquid they have to be processed to make them solid and spreadable... so have you thought about not using them and trying something else instead?

What about using different veg oils, such as olive, walnut or sesame? These oils can be expensive but you are not going to use heaps, so they will last a while... plus they will give extra flavour, and boost your intake of good essential fats which can be lacking if vegans dont take time to include nuts and seeds in their diet.

Another favourtie (which ok means you have to have a grinder/blender, and takes a minute of your time) is to blend pumpkin seeds to a paste (add a little oil or water to help it blend, and you can add a tiny bit of salt to taste if you wish) This can be used instead of margarine on toast.... it doesnt 'melt in' but I dont notice it when i add something else on top of it ( i wouldnt eat on its own...not so exciting!) This way you get lots of good fats and a healthy dose of zinc too!

for any other cooking I would always use oil instead of margarine... even in cakes/muffins or breadmaking.

Hope that helps!

Hi ya
I used to use vegan marg (cant remember the names anymore), but I stopped buying them about 4 years ago and to be honest I really dont see why I used to buy it before. Most of what I used marg for I now use oil (except on sandwiches).
I am convinced even vegan marg is not so good for you.

on the rare occasion that i use vegan butter, i use smart balance. however, i prefer to use applesauce in baking, (it makes for nice moist desserts!) and oil when i must in cooking, generally olive oil

Posted:     Post subject: VEGAN BUTTERS

Hey everyone:

This is an interesting forum, im surprised no one is up to date on the real stuff... Anyway, I use this amazing butter for baking and cooking. Its called "Soy Garden Soy Butter". Brand is Earth Balance. Its Non-hydrogenated, low sodium, 100% vegan, and tastes better than real dairy butter! Its not expensive either. I know some of you mentioned Smart Balance, but Soy Garden is way better. Email me if you have other questions about vegan foods - I am an expert on the vegan lifestyle, and have had great success with it.

Ciao!

.I know it has nothing to do with dating but here goes. have you ever seen anything under the label of conservation that is anything but conservation. IE things like killing birds in traps for ringing purposes, or cutting down trees then someone claiming it to be conservation. If you have let me know as i want this information for a book.

.yes i know what you mean, a recent ex of mine had a beautiful lyme tree in his garden, he always led people to believe he was very green, caring about the planet, veggie etc. This tree didnt go with his image so he was talking about cutting it down even though it was so beautiful. The other thing was the way he was so anti animal cruelty and was veggie yet in his bathroom he had loads of products that were known to be tested on animals and probably containing animal products in them. Really annoys me when someone is such a hypocryte like that.

HI.!
I noticed your query was posted a while ago, so \I'm not sure if this will be of any help.
'Vitalite' is dairty-free now, so is suitable. Our local Co-Op stocks a vegan marg and Morrisons used to do one but I haven' been there for ages, so can't say if they still do.
'Pure' is ok but Sainsburys 'Free From' is the best of the lot as far as I'm concerned. Could you check other stores or try ordering online.???
I wish you well in your search
